Why women's sleep deserves extra attention
International Women's Day – an ode to female sleep
Sleep is not the same for everyone. While we all need rest, research shows that women more often have difficulty sleeping than men. According to research by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, women are almost twice as likely as men to report rarely waking up feeling rested.
On International Women's Day, we therefore take a moment to reflect on a surprisingly often forgotten topic: women's sleep.
Why women sleep worse more often
Sleep research shows that women, on average, suffer significantly more often from insomnia than men. In some studies, the risk is even 40% higher.
This has several causes.
1. Hormones
From puberty, hormonal changes begin to play a role in sleep. Fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause can disrupt sleep patterns.
2. Mental burden
Statistically, women are more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression. These are two factors strongly associated with sleep problems.
3. Physical factors
Certain sleep disorders are also more common in women, such as restless legs or chronic insomnia.
The result?
More difficulty falling asleep, waking up more often during the night, and waking up feeling less rested.
The influence of your sleep environment.
Although many factors influence sleep, the sleep environment plays a huge role. Think of:
- temperature
- light
- sound
- and especially: the bed you sleep on
A mattress that doesn't provide proper support can lead to pressure points, tossing and turning in your sleep, and a less deep night's rest.
Natural materials, natural sleep
At COCO-MAT, we believe that good sleep starts with natural materials and a healthy sleep environment.
Our mattresses are made from materials such as:
- natural latex
- coconut fiber
- seaweed
- horsehair
- cotton and wool
These materials have several important advantages:
1. Breathability
Natural fibers ventilate better than synthetic materials. This keeps your body temperature more stable throughout the night.
2. Ergonomic support
The layered construction provides better body support, reducing pressure points.
3. Adaptability
At COCO-MAT, almost all products have a zipper. This means that layers can be replaced or adjusted. Your bed can therefore change with you.
Sleep is personal.
Everyone sleeps differently.
And that certainly applies to women.
That's why we don't believe in one standard mattress for everyone. By combining different layers, toppers, and pillows, a bed can be fully customized to your body and your sleep habits.
Because ultimately, it all comes down to one thing:
waking up feeling like you've truly slept.
