General
Where are the mattresses made?
The company’s headquarters are located in the industrial area of Xanthi, Greece, where its products are manufactured in a 123,000m2 factory with an additional 25,000m2 of office space.
Can I order a custom-made mattress?
The mattresses, bed mattresses and toppers can be made to measure.
Why isn't the double mattress produced in one piece?
The two inner mattress covers are connected at the top with a single seam. On top of that, there's a second outer cover, which is a single piece without a seam. This way, the mattresses are independent, but without any gaps. We do this to a) prevent one person's body weight from impacting the other, and b) make them easier to handle (in terms of transport, removing the covers, turning them over, etc.).
If I have my own base, does it have to meet certain criteria for a COCO-MAT mattress?
The mattress should be placed on a surface that allows ventilation. The planks supporting the mattress should be straight, stable, and 2 cm thick, with a distance of 5-7 cm between each plank. It is not recommended to support the mattress with large wooden planks without any space between them, as this will prevent the mattress from ventilating properly.
What should I know about maintaining my mattress?
The mattress should be turned every six months so that the top part, where the head rests, replaces the bottom part. Furthermore, the mattress should be flipped every six months or less to revitalize the materials. For double mattresses, the seam of the inner cover should always face upward. The mattress should not be exposed to sunlight without its cover, as sunlight causes natural rubber to depolymerize and decompose. Furthermore, it must be protected from water, sweat, or other liquids. When storing, it is strongly recommended to place it on one of its long sides (horizontally and evenly, never on its side). Never place the mattress upright on its short side, as this will wear out the materials. For more maintenance tips, see our maintenance page.
Are the mattress covers washable?
They can be machine washed at 30°C without spinning and dried in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. It's also recommended to stretch them before they're completely dry to minimize shrinkage.
What type of base is recommended for a mattress?
The mattress should be placed on a surface that allows ventilation. The slats supporting the mattress should be straight, stable, and 2 cm (0.8 in.) thick, with a spacing of 5-7 cm (2-2.7 in.). It is not recommended to place the mattress on large wooden planks without any space between them, as this will not provide sufficient ventilation. The mattress should never be placed on flat surfaces, thick fabrics, or plastic bags, as these will prevent ventilation.
Do the mattresses emit an odor?
As is typical of all natural materials, ours also emit a very subtle scent for a short period. Rest assured, this scent is naturally harmless and gradually diminishes over time.
Do the mattresses have a cover?
Regarding akarea, which has become the leading cause of allergies in our time, we must emphasize the following: as long as the covers of our mattresses are washed, the risk of contracting akarea is eliminated.
Why does the mattress have a zipper?
The mattresses have zippers so the covers can be removed and washed. We also value our customers' trust in our products; the zippers allow us to show and explain what's inside each mattress.
What are the benefits of a bed mattress?
A bed mattress consists of a frame (a simple wooden base) and a mattress, all in one. However, there's a fundamental difference between a bed mattress and a simple bed with a mattress: the ergonomic base; all the layers of the bed mattress rest on this. The ergonomic base is made of eucalyptus wood slats and pieces of solid natural rubber (better known as natural latex). The wooden slats are 6 cm wide and 1 cm thick. They are supported by four strips that run the entire length of the bed and contain strips of natural latex. The ergonomic slatted base is placed in the base of the bed mattress and increases the elasticity of the bed's surface.
Does the bed mattress have a zipper?
Yes, this makes it easier to view and access the interior and makes maintenance easier.
Sizes
Available in any desired size.
Can I customize the legs and fabric of my bed mattress and headboard?
All bed mattresses and headboards can be covered in a variety of fabric designs and colors. These fabric covers are removable and washable to protect the underlying layers from stains. The bed mattress rests on wooden or metal legs, available in various sizes and designs, which can be easily screwed on and off, allowing you to change them whenever you like. That's why we also offer a wide variety of casters.
What does the mattress topper have to offer?
The mattress topper complements the support provided by the mattress and fills the space between curved areas of the body (legs, arms, neck, back) that the mattress can't reach. It also creates more elasticity and improves blood circulation. Finally, the mattress topper also acts as a protector, increasing the mattress's lifespan.
Can I get the mattress topper separately and place it on my current mattress?
Yes, if the mattress is in good condition, meaning it has no dips or irregularities. Our mattress toppers are also not suitable for memory foam mattresses.
Cushions
How do I choose the right pillow?
The pillow is the mattress for the head and neck. Like the mattress, the pillow should support both the neck and head so they don't deviate from their natural (correct) position. For example, when we lie on our backs on a mattress, the pillow should support the head and neck in such a way that they maintain a position similar to a standing position. To achieve this, the pillow must have the necessary height to fill the gap between the mattress and the curve of the neck.
If the pillow is higher, the head will lean forward, stretching the seventh cervical vertebra and gradually causing pain in that area. Our body plays a paramount role in choosing the right pillow.
How can I adjust and maintain my pillow?
Pillows are made of: a) natural rubber flakes, b) feathers or down, c) a combination of the above, and d) wool. Natural rubber pillows have a zipper to adjust the amount of material and are not washable, except for the pillowcase. Feather or down pillows are ideal for smaller bodies and are machine washable at 30°C (they must be dried thoroughly, otherwise they may release unpleasant odors).
Materials
What materials do you use?
Some of the materials that form the basis of COCO-MAT are: Natural rubber, the sap of the HEVEA tree. After proper processing, it is transformed into a natural latex foam layer. Our natural latex retains a high degree of purity, making us one of the most committed companies when it comes to using all-natural materials.
Coconut fiber refers to the fibers that cover the coconut shell. These fibers must undergo proper processing and are then combined with natural latex to create elastic coconut fibers. Horsehair contributes to moisture regulation.
Why should I choose a mattress made of natural materials instead of a pocket spring mattress?
Mattresses without pocket springs are comparatively superior to mattresses with pocket springs because natural materials provide even, isometric support for the body. Pocket springs, on the other hand, provide very uneven support, especially when comparing the surface directly above the spring with the surface between the springs.
Moreover, traditional mattresses produce noise. Although many springs are covered with cotton, they are made of steel, and the risk of noise is still higher. Finally, our mattresses last longer. Their resilience over time is due not only to the nature of the material but also to the layering of the materials, which allows for maximum elasticity without sacrificing support. Natural rubber returns to its original shape, while springs wear out after a few years.
What is the difference between natural latex and memory foam?
The natural rubber COCO-MAT uses comes from the sap of the HEVEA tree. After careful processing, it is transformed into a foamy natural latex layer that is perfectly elastic.
Why does COCO-MAT use elastic coconut fibre?
Coconut fibers are combed out and sprayed with natural rubber for extra elasticity.
Why should a mattress be elastic instead of just firm or soft?
To allow the body to rest, muscle use must be minimized without altering the body's natural state. To achieve this, the entire body must be supported by the mattress, filling in the gaps between the mattress and the surface. The mattress should conform to the body's shape, not the other way around.
A firm and stiff mattress can't properly accommodate the curves of the body. Both the curved parts of the body and the lighter parts (neck, back, legs, arms) are therefore unsupported. A flexible mattress is ideal for full body support because it conforms to the shape.
What type of wood does COCO-MAT use for its furniture?
COCO-MAT furniture is made of oak.
How are down and feather products washed?
All down and feather products can be machine washed at 30 degrees Celsius, preferably with liquid detergent and an extra rinse cycle. Then tumble dry on a cold cycle with tennis balls. This prevents the down from sticking together.
